Mike Lu undergoes pediatric open heart surgery to fix a hole in his heart. Fluent in Mandarin, his family's language barrier complicated the otherwise routine procedure.

 • Seven-year-old Mike Lu waits in his hospital bed the day before surgery, to repair a hole in his heart, as his father talks to a doctor. Mike says since he is a boy, he can't be afraid.
• Dr. Albert Pacifico stitches up the half dollar-sized hole that was in Mike's heart. Repairing the defect took Pacifico only six minutes; the entire procedure only one hour and 16 minutes.
